Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - ARE YOU STYLIN'? (YOU CAN STYLE TOO!)
After graduation a friend recommended 'Stylin' with CSS' that not only added to my understanding of CSS, but also became a GREAT resource guide for me. While the book is geared toward the novice, the appendices provide a clear, concise, and organized breakdown of CSS properties along with their descriptions, values, and version compatibility, which I find very useful.

'Stylin' with CSS' gives the reader a solid understanding of many of the CSS rules that, in the beginning, baffle a designer. IDs and classes are thoroughly reviewed in a fresh style. Collapsing margins are addressed to help designers create sturdy fixed or liquid designs (both types of layouts are discussed in detail). Column length and positioning are given attention as well.

Thanks to this book, I am confident that the added insight will improve my future designs and allow me to deliver CSS-generated sites more effectively. To all the novice designers who are reading this review, go on and buy ... Read More

Stylin' with CSS: A Designer's Guide (2nd Edition) (Voices That Matter)

Last year, I led the charge of moving our software away from desktop applications towards .NET/ASP/SQL. I rented and configured virtual server space, put in a basic security and a login scheme, configured both IIS and SQL Server. Yes, it was difficult.

But not as difficult as putting together web pages that looked good and behaved well. I come from the "table" school of web design. That way, things behaved like MS Word. The trouble with that approach is that I would end up fighting with the layouts and look and feel would become somewhat industrial.

"Stylin" helped me enough last year to maintain consistency across pages by creating ASP control style sheets and ASP Master pages.

So, this year I decided to have another go at "taming the page". I also wanted to understand the relationship between CSS and AJAX.

I learned that maintainable AJAX sites absolutely ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great CSS Book!
I have looked at a number of books to help me get started again in web page design. Stylin' with CSS is by far the best book Ive found. It is very readable, well-organized, and proceeds in a logical manner from some XHTML through the important aspects of CSS. The book covers, layouts, positioning, styles and a host of other topics. Many examples are presented in a clear manner. You can download examples from the author's website for even more information. Stylin' with CSS is a real winner! Highly recommended.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Eminently readable
The best introduction to XHTML and CSS I've found. Explains everything you need to know to get up to speed, with lots of always-relevant extras. Excellent layout, with helpful sidebars that saved me tons of time in not having to hyperlink away for more information.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent guide to css
This is an excellent book on css. It is the best book on css that I own, and I own a several. It is well written, and does a great job of explaining nuances.

The book is also physically appealing. The pages lay flat, unlike some books that you have to hold in place, and there is room on the page to take a few notes and underscore important concepts.

CSS is deceptively difficult. It starts out easy enough, but it is full of quirks and browser incompatibilities. And small quirks can turn into big pains. This author does a great job of addressing those quirks, and he offers suggestions on avoiding the css pitfalls.
