Editorial Review:
Product Description: Living legend Pete Seeger puts his own unique spin on the classic story of a soldier helping a village come together after the ravages of war. Set during the Thirty Years War, its the children of the village who add a little salt, some bones, and a few vegetables to the soup of stones and water, as their skeptical parents stand and watch. As they make the soup, the soldier sings: "Stone Soup is what you need/when you have some friends to feed." Before long theres enough to feed the whole town even the grown-ups!
A new version of a beloved story, Some Friends to Feed includes a brandnew song and CD recording by Pete, featuring both the text and the music. In no time, everyone will have fun singing along with Pete.

This is a beautifully illustrated version of Stone Soup. It has the same type of lush artwork and vibrant depictions of people that are in "Abiyoyo", a book by the same author and illustrator. This Stone Soup story is not as detailed as some other versions and so is suitable for a younger audience (K, preK).
In my sped class of 1st and 2nd grade level readers, we read and compared the Margaret Brown and Jon Muth versions. This Pete Seegar version was not as useful for this task, but my students enjoyed the book. There is not as much emphasis on the moral lessons (sharing, honesty, working together)and there is less emphasis on the details - the party at the end, where the food was hidden, best beds, etc.

What a wonderful book to teach small children about sharing! Used it in my class at church and then made "stone soup". Woncerful!
