Active Directory is at the heart of Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 Server. It is the central repository where Windows stores information on network resources and about users. To access Active Directory programmatically, you need to know about directory services programming.
.NET gives programmers a whole new API&emdash;the System.DirectoryServices namespace&emdash;that they can use to access Active Directory and other directory services. This API largely (and happily) replaces COM-based ADSI.
Pro .NET Directory Services Programming shows you how to use the classes in the System.DirectoryServices namespace. The aim is not to give you a laundry list of classes with their methods and properties, but to enable you to focus on how to solve real problems, such as searching a directory for specific objects. After covering the general techniques for working with directory services in .NET, the book zooms in on three particular scenarios: managing users and groups, network administration, and working with Exchange Server.

I found blacked out images throughout the book. Can't tell you what should have been there. Astonishingly poor for any published work. Perhaps it was only my copy. The subject matter is highly useful - keeping it above one star.

I found this book useful *as an introduction* to programming Directory Services in .NET (and enterprise directories in general). It starts with a brief, but well written overview of what are directory services. The following chapters talk about the .NET and COM APIs used to query and modify the directory objects and schema. If you a are *new* to Active Directory you will find this book useful, but I'm afraid that if you have done already some ASDI or System.DirectoryServices programming, there is not much new material to find here, but I recomend reading it anyway.
You must be already fluent in C#, but there are plenty of good C# books, so I found it very adequate that this book does not start with a C# or .NET introduction.
My only complaint, is that, although it is advertised in the back cover, there is NO ONLINE CODE TO DOWNLOAD from Apress site. This is annoying, because half of the book is devoted to building a couple of sample applications for managing users ... Read More
