Editorial Review:
Product Description: We know from the success of titles such as Web Standards Solutions , Cascading Style Sheets: Separating Content from Presentation, and the Web Designer's Reference that web designers are increasingly concerned with making sites that don't just look pretty, but are also built using current best practices. There are three main technologies married together to create usable, standards-compliant web designs: XHTML for data structure, Cascading Style Sheets for styling your data, and JavaScript for adding dynamic effects and manipulating structure on the fly using the Document Object Model. This book is about the latter of the three. DOM Scripting: Web Design with JavaScript and the Document Object Model gives you everything you need to start using JavaScript and the Document Object Model to enhance your web pages with client-side dynamic effects. Jermey starts off by giving you a basic crash course in JavaScript and the DOM, then move on to provide you with several real world examples built up from scratch including dynamic image galleries and dynamic menus, and show you how to manipulate web page style using the CSS DOM, and create markup on the fly. You'll learn how to:
* Apply dynamic behavior to your pages without inserting JavaScript in your markup.
* Write scripts that degrade gracefully when JavaScript isnt available.
* Use web standards to ensure cross-browser compatibility.
* Harness the power of the DOM to create user-controlled animation.
* Also includes an introduction to Ajax.

clear and solid. i actually went to the author's website and told him to write more book -- any book he writes, i will buy it. this book offers a solid introduction to the Document Object Model (DOM), and how to code it using Javascript. It can be a hard to grasp topic, but the author does a great job making it simple to understand so you can apply it right away.

I first read this book over a year a go, when I started learning about the DOM. My impression then was that it was a 'light', easy and breezy read.
I have now been programming the DOM solidly for a year and constantly return to this book, particularly because it has a good reference at the back. This book does the lot,as understanding the DOM is really quite easy with complications arising of the implementation in different scenarios, which this book covers all well.
I rate this book up there with David Flanagan's JavaScript: The Definitive Guide. These two books have taught me to do some spectacular things with JavaScript and the DOM.
Some books are written by people who explain so well you don't even realize that you are 'getting it'. This is one of those books, I got it, I suggest you buy the book too if want to "get it".

This is quite possibly the best book on DOM and JavaScript I have ever read. It is written for design majors who want to learn how to use the DOM, but as an effect it makes the book extremely approachable for all skill levels.
This is an introductory book, and if you are already skilled with JavaScript + DOM, I would still recommend it as his coding style is immaculate, but it will likely contain little new technology information.
I could write a detailed review, but instead I'll just say, buy this book if you want to learn DOM Scripting the right way. My first thought on finishing this book was "The web would be a much better place if this book had been published in 1997."

DOM Scripting: Web Design with JavaScript and the Document Object Model is a rare occurrence amongst the myriad of JavaScript/DOM books I've seen on bookstore shelves. What's remarkable is the organization and clarity of DOM Scripting.
The two most exciting web technologies at the moment are DOM Scripting and AJAX, and the two go hand in hand. Learning JavaScript doesn't necessarily equip you to use either, so a straightforward manual on the subject is in order. If you have any interest in learning DOM Scripting, this is the perfect book.
This is an introductory level book, so if you have some experience with DOM Scripting then you'll find yourself relearning things you already know. As always, I enjoy going over things I already know well because it builds the bigger picture more accurately and cements things in. Much of the book covers things I actually already knew, but it shows how they can applied in ways I haven't seen before. In requiring this, I found it ... Read More

I consider this book an excellent primer and one of the most accurate compilations for approaching DOM and JS. My intention for purchasing the book was for deep knowledge and that's where I was let down. It does just a bit more than scratch the surface on the topic and is most accurate. Excellent book for beginners and students wanting to understand the correct way to approach DOM and JS. I would not recommend for advanced readers looking to really exercise their ability on the topics.
