Product Description:
- A step by step tutorial to getting your Joomla! CMS website up fast
- Walk through each step in a friendly and accessible way
- Customize and extend your Joomla! site
- Get your Joomla! website up fast
In Detail
Joomla! is a fully featured web content management system and was created in Summer 2005 as a fork from the hugely popular Mambo CMS with many of the original Mambo developers moving their efforts to Joomla! While still in its first release, it is supported by an active and well organized open source development team and community. Joomla! is both easy to use at the entry level for creating basic websites, whilst having the power and flexibility to support complex web applications. Joomla! implements the core requirements of a full-featured CMS. It has a powerful and extensible templating system with the ability to upload and manage many different data types. User access control, content approval, rich administrative control, and content display scheduling are all built-in. New features and extensions are constantly added to the core system, with many more being available and supported by the community
What you will learn from this book?
The book begins by introducing Joomla! and concepts behind content management. Then the installation of Joomla!, and its supporting software [Apache/MySQL/PHP] is covered clearly and simply. Once you have the installation up and running, we then take a tour of Joomla! as it appears out of the box, to familiarize ourselves with how it works and what is what. As you take the tour, your own ideas for what you need in your new website begin to crystallize around what you can see Joomla! is capable of. We then build our web application, using only the features of Joomla! we really need. Once we have a base version of our site up, we then learn how to change its appearance and feature set to suit our particular requirements, including bringing it into line with an established corporate identity. At the end of the book we show how you can add your own extensions to Joomla!.
Approach
This book focuses on taking you through the essential tasks to create a Joomla! site as fast as possible. These essential tasks are explained clearly, with well structured step-by-step instructions. The book does not aim to cover every feature of Joomla! nor is it a comprehensive guide to extending Joomla!. Almost everything in the book is accomplished without recourse to the underlying PHP code in which Joomla! is written. The book is very readable and the author has a particularly chatty and engaging writing style.
Who this book is written for?
This book is suitable for web developers, designers, webmasters, content editors and marketing professionals who want develop a fully featured web presence in a simple and straightforward process. It does not require any detailed knowledge of programming or web development, and any IT confident individual will be able to use the book to produce an impressive web site.

This books does not live up to its title. Most of the examples are code dumps with rudimentary explanations. The author obviously does not know effective teaching skills such as the power of diagrams and pictures. Screen dumps of Joomla! are of awful quality and resolution and are completely out of their aspect ratio.
My biggest disappointment was Chapter 15 - Your Own Components, Modules, and Plug-ins. The is mostly a dump of source code with minimial comments and explanations. There is no description of the control flow within Joomla. It is assumed that one is an expert on Joomla and "entry points". A sentence such as "Experts on entry points will notice that this looks very familiar" is quite arrogant in a book which is supposed to be a tutorial.
I recommend the author to read one of Sitepoint's (I dont work for them, btw) books to understand how to write good books.
Lucky for me, my copy was a borrowed one and not bought.

Being a hacker who liked to play with Open source software, I read the book jacket and purchased Building Websites with Joomla! because I thought it would tell me more then I knew already. It was not necessarily all that great. It confirmed what I knew but not much more.
I now build websites using Joomla and I can say you may want to get a more detailed and relevant document if you have any experience with Joomla.

Please don't waste your money on this product. It just explains the basic template...
What a rip-off!

As you have probably read in about 90% of the reviews posted, this book has very little to offer. There isn't even a hint of a "step-by-step" guide to building a website found anywhere in the book. Instead, the author continually states the obvious chapter after chapter by going over each menu item and what it means. Do you really need the author to tell you to place the title of your page or module in the box marked Title???? For modules and components, it explains what they are but does not offer one line of text on either telling you how to use them. I can go on and on, but to make a long story short save your money. Simply stated it is a pitiful excuse for a development guide and does nothing to live up to the title. There isn't a thing in the book you can't get from the available online Joomla! manual or from just plain common sense. Pretty worthless.

Sadly, this book contains very little that's not in the free official Joomla user manual, and what it does contain is not very clearly presented.
The author spends most of his time explaining things that should be obvious to anyone using the program, serving up such gems as "Site name: This is the name of the site..."
Hopefully the new crop of Joomla books slated for publication will offer more. Until then, save your money.
