Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video: The second most-watched miniseries (after Roots) of all time, The Thorn Birds was originally broadcast in 1983 and captivated viewers with its story of a lifelong conflict between the spirit and the flesh. Adapted from the bestselling novel by Colleen McCullough, the production stars Richard Chamberlain as a Catholic priest named Ralph de Bricassart, whose life in Australia between 1920 and 1962 is one long torment as he pines for his lover, Meggie Carson (Rachel Ward), while seeking advancement in his clergyman career. The passion and the guilt make for compelling drama, but a stellar cast of supporting players adds muscle to the proceedings: Barbara Stanwyck (who won an Emmy for her work as Meggie's tough grandmother), Jean Simmons, Richard Kiley, Christopher Plummer, Bryan Brown, and Mare Winningham. Chamberlain, who was something of the king of the miniseries form at the time, is very good in the lead, as is the often-underrated Ward. Their affair is indeed irresistible to watch, which proves to be true, too, of the story's thick weave of church politics, forbidden desire, social change over decades, and family secrets. --Tom Keogh

This movie is timeless...a great movie with great actors. I can watch it over and over again without being bored. It's up there with the Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind and others. I'll never be disappointed with this purchase which was delivered in a very timely and professional manner.

Finally.....my favorite television mini-series of all time on DVD. It's wonderful to be able to watch the entire series without commercial interruption. Too bad 25 years ago no one knew that someday we would want to see behind the scenes footage - "the making of The Thorn Birds." The only thing that would make this DVD set better is if there were extras, but I'm sure they are not available.

The DVD was just as expected. It was way too pricey for a DVD, but it came as no suprise. Shipping was way too much to.

I watched this mini series in the 80s. I loved it then and even more so now. This movie is a classic. It spans over forty years to portray a love story that could never be between an ambitious priest and a love-struck girl. Barbara Stanwyck gave the performance of her life. She was awesome and a key figure in this sage of love, neglect, favoritism, religion, and ambition.
