Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
The first Gundam movie (1981) consists of recut footage from the first 15 episodes of the watershed TV series Mobile Suit Gundam (1979). In the year 0079 of Yoshiyuki Tomino's "Universal Century," war rages between the Earth Federation and the space-based Principality of Zeon. Unlike the dedicated pilots of later mecha adventures, Amuro Ray becomes a hero in spite of himself. When Zeon raiders devastate his home, the orbiting space colony Side 7, Amuro stumbles into the cockpit of the Federation's secret weapon, the Gundam Mobile Suit RX-78. His talent as a pilot brings him into conflict with the dashing, unscrupulous Zeon ace Char Aznable. Amuro finds his resolve tested as he interacts with the other characters, who have also been pressed into service. Although the story is far from over, the film ends with Amuro tentatively accepting his role as a soldier. Rated 13 Up: Minor profanity, violence. --Charles Solomon

Description:
In the year 0079 of the Universal Century, the Earth Federation and its space colonies are engaged in an apocalyptic war. The rebellious Duchy of Zeon, using humanoid fighting machines called mobile suits, has all but vanquished the Federation. Now the Federation's last hope is the prototype Mobile Suit Gundam. When a twist of fate makes young civilian Amuro Ray the Gundam's pilot, his own battle begins - a struggle not only for the Federation's survival, but for his own.

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Re released with new audio, yes, that is bad.
In the 02 release the sound has been re-recorded or "mastered" or something like that. Also the credit roll track has been changed in the second movie; replaced with AISENSHI from the climactic fight scene. The result was for me an unpleasant surprise. It had been a long time since I had seen the originals and I was feeling nostalgic so I rented them. I am glad i did not jut buy them straight away. It all seems out of place and just wrong. Great covers though. If you can I strongly suggest you look for an older release.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - dissapointing
I was so looking forward to this finally coming out on dvd since I have the movies on VHS and they were dubbed, but when the dvds came out and weren't dubbed I was pissed

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Good intro into Gundam
I had to review when I saw that this has gotten some negative reviews. For shame, people, for shame.

Anyway, this is the original Mobile Suit Gundam; well, condensed into a 7 hour movie trilogy anyway. I'm going to be honest and say that sitting down and watching this for 7 hours does get pretty long, even for a diehard Gundam fan like myself. However, the animation is crisp and the voice actors are the original Japanese, as opposed to the cheap TV series and its even cheaper dub. So, whenever I want to watch a scene from MSG that's in the movies, I choose that over the TV series.

Anyway, this anime has it all: war, politics, battles, romance, drama, even comedy. I am a teenage girl who by all rights should love Wing, but instead loves MSG. The characters are incredible; well-developed and totally realistic. And may I say that MSG's romances tend to be subtle, but they are simply awesome.

This was my first taste of the original Gundam, and after ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - don't see it too long and boring
This movie was boring they prolonged it for so long what made it so boring not enough action. More talking then anything. If you like poor animation and the characters talking alot and not enough action then this is the one for you our if you like old animations.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Anime that change the history of anime
This is the first installment to the first Gundam trilogy. The movie is edited version of a TV show that is 20 years old, but the depth of the story and the characters far exceeds some of anime or even sci-fi movies today. This is the anime that changed the history of anime. This is the must see not only for anime fans, but those who shunted anime as kid stuff.
