Editorial Review:
Product Description:
IT services firms are not having it easy. Growth in services spending is slow, and with the exception of the outsourcing markets, there is little real cause for cheer. As technology vendors listen to customer demand for smarter and simpler products, with more built-in industry expertise, services firms are slowly, but surely, losing a key means of differentiating themselves in the market. Over the past five to ten years, many providers of IT software and services have decided to use vertical market go-to-market models. Some have done it whole-heartedly and structured their entire organizations around industry sectors, while others have left it to the front-line sales organization to target specific industries. However, as with any other aspect of the services market, new trends emerge and services companies must adapt, in order to differentiate themselves and compete successfully in the face of this new environment.
This study discusses a trend that is now emerging which indicates that relying solely on a vertical go-to-market model may have run its course in the IT industry. For those who have only just decided to join this wave, it may be too late. "This approach to the market is coming to the end of its life cycle and a new approach is needed in order for services firms to differentiate themselves, while delivering extra value and competitive advantage to their clients", said Marianne Kolding, director European Services with IDC. "Future go-to-market models will relate more to type of process or even type of business than the specific industry. However, this doesn't mean that the knowledge or expertise in a specific industry sector will not be needed; it will just not be the most appropriate road to market."
