I love the guitar, but Guitar Center is about as clueless a company to deal with as I have ever encountered.
1 - I paid for the guitar online with my credit card. The amount was $139. When I got my credit card statement the bill was for $151. Upon investigation I discovered that the extra $12 was for sales tax. That amount should have shown up the invoice I got online BEFORE I authorized the charge.
2 - So I wrote to Guitar Center and complained about the charge and they totally ignored my letter.
3 - Shipped with the guitar was a flyer for 123Music that offered the same guitar for $40 cheaper than I paid for it and free shipping and no tax. I could have bought it from them for $51 less than I paid Guitar Center.
4 - Then Guitar Center sends me spam, advertising the totally worthless extended warranty. I didn't sign up for spam.
Four strikes and Guitar Center is out. I will never buy from them again.

Why not step up to Dean Edge 10a with active electronics?! You will get two pick-ups and way more tone options for $149!!! The 09 is ok for a throw in the trunk type bass but for a few bucks more you can get so much more. BTW, my son has a black 09 and a black 10a so we have played/heard both side by side. To put it in perspective we bought a beater 09 of CL for $25 and are in the process of defretting it as a first time experiment. The 09 is a great candidate for something like that where a mistake won't hurt too bad. You should be able to pick up a black 09 for around $100 new. Maybe the natural look is worth the extra to you.

I've been learning to play bass with this model for about a year and a half, and I enjoy it thoroughly. It's lighter than some instruments, but still has enough mass that it has a good tone. The neck is maybe not as slender as some fancier, faster basses, but it's still quite comfortable. It stays in tune well, and I've never had any troubles with the knobs or electronics.
With only a single pickup, and just knobs for volume and treble, you don't have much flexibility in sound. If you're just learning or playing for fun, this isn't much of an issue. The bass sounds great for a variety of jazz, blues and rock. One person I play with thinks the tone from this bass is nicer than one of his that cost about eight times as much.
A couple of other thoughts... You'll want to find a local guitar store to help you make adjustments periodically (and perhaps with initial setup), or learn to do it yourself. I use a Behringer practice amp, and it's partially responsible ... Read More
