Editorial Review:
Product Description: Murs, one of rap's biggest independent success stories and a pioneering L.A. underground hip-hop start for a decade, finally makes his major label debut with Murs For President. A vote for Murs is a vote for eclectic, genre-bending, politically charged, musically adventurous, and genuinely entertaining rap (Snoop Dogg and will.i.am are featured on the album). A vote for Murs is a vote for the future!

This is one of my favorite albums of the year, along with Lupe. It's one of the few albums where you stop and think, "wait, did he really just say that." Thoughtful, original lyrical combinations.

While I'm a newly won Murs fan, I find this album to be a little too commercial. However, I think in his major label debut, Murs has found his niche. Other underground hip hop artists tend to conform their style to the commercial standard. This release, meanwhile, shows his style and goofiness while still giving us introspective. One of the songs stands out on its own - "Everything" This was an awesome collaboration/choice of sample. While many of his songs are introspective, Murs shows us a deep and meaningful angle on his life and career.
The songs "Lookin' Fly" and "Love and Appreciate II" are a bit poppy. However, overall the album stays true to original Murs while pushing his craft a little farther.

The arrival of 'Murs for President' has been built up for months upon months by internet buzz and hip-hop circle hype. Murs has put in serious work as a 'community organizer' in the underground hip-hop scene by setting up tour spots for the up-n-comers,organizing and hosting the well attended 'Paid Dues Fest' and generally putting Southern California back on the 'Rap Map' and has built up a reputable personality doing so.
Murs rides thru this album with his true-to-form swagger and 'This is Murs' lyricism. While not trying to be over political, although their are a few cuts with his insight on society, Murs elaborates on many other themes like 'being on the road', 'treating his girl like a queen', 'remember when?' and 'back on the scene' tracks, constructing this well-put together project. The beats are definitely something to write home about; with a quality selection of producers(9th Wonder,Will.I.Am,DJ Quik, Scoop DeVille, etc). Murs gets the 'banger treatment' on many of ... Since the very beginning of Murs' career, he has always had a different outlook on the game than his fellow peers from the west coast power-house collective, the Living Legends crew. Since 1995, Murs has been one of the hardest working rappers in the game. Officially, this is his 7th full-length album, which barely speaks of his entire career. He's a part of the collective known as 3 Melancholy Gypsy's, who've released 2 full-length albums. He's also part of the duo Felt, with Slug from Atmosphere, who are currently working on their 3rd album. And besides appearing on 7 full-length Living Legends releases, he's appeared on approximately 50 records within and outside the crew.
One of the things I've always noticed about Murs is that he's never been tied down to a certain type of sound or producer. From Eligh, to Bicasso, to El-P, to 9th Wonder, to Terrace Martin; Murs stays inspired like a true artist from the golden age. Whether he's dropping material on an independent label, ... Read More
