I normally love Thomas Kinkade calendars. I absolutely have to get one each year and immediately hang it on my wall. Not only do I get a calendar to keep my life organized, I get a beautiful piece of art. But I felt the need to write a review of the 2009 calendar this year because of the format. While the calendar format in the past has usually been neutral and complimentary to the art above, this year there are bold borders running around the calendar layout. Some colors are not so bad, while others tend to look garish and take away from the art. The bottom of each month is bordered with a neutral color and includes a scripture passage which is a nice addition, and I have no qualms with that. Many people dismiss Kinkade, putting him in the same artistic space as Hummel figurines and lifelike silicone dolls (um... I mean the cute baby ones that grandmothers collect.) However, I maintain his true affiliations are with Lord of the Rings and Yellow Submarine. He's like some unacknowledged 60's master illustrator of the mushroom experience. Each page is filled with altered reality, subversive consciousness-expanding art disguised for mass consumption! The light shines through each mind-numbing, placid setting, beckoning you to seek Truth! And yet even the most timid feel absolutely safe hanging this on their cube walls. Brilliant.
