I bought this book after two others and this one is excellent if you're just getting started. I found the other books too shallow but this one provides a nice degree of depth for a beginner without being overwhelming and at the same time not being so basic as to be able to be tossed aside after 15 minutes.

This book starts with basic info, but also includes many useful tricks to use in dreamweaver cs3. After a quarter of reading the more technical aspects show, which is what i was looking for.

This is one of the best books for web designing. McFarland really does a good job of explaining and he doesn't expect you to know anything much. This is a great book for beginners and for experts too because he separates the explanations into different sections such as "tips", "up to speed" which experts do not have to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone. Some people complain this book is too long, but this is because he makes sure you remember stuff and may say things multiple time throughout the book.

This book is an excellent partner to the lynda.com online learning. You just need that visual and audio explanation that the online learning provides when you are a total novice, like myself, trying to learn web design, and in particular Dreamweaver. BUT, this book REALLY fills in the gaps and compliments that program very well, and also gives quite a bit of additional information. [...] but I am beginning to put it all together and if I could just get a few private lessons to top off this other learning I would be in a great position. Dreamweaver is not the easy program some would have you think it is, I did find that I needed McFarland's companion manual on CSS so that I could really grasp the code aspect of design. His two manuals and the online tutorials have all dovetailed together well.

The "Missing Manual" for Adobe CS3 is certainly chocked full of incredibly useful information, and I will still use it for reference as I continue to educate myself with Dreamweaver; however, I think there are far better resources out there for beginners. This book is over 1000 pages long! It took about 70 pages just to start actually designing a web page. There are free online tutorials that are much more efficient than following the very detailed step-by-step instructions in this book. Check out the free video tutorials on Lynda.com: [...] The first 10 short videos were about as educational as the first hundred pages in this book and took far less time. Good luck!
